Archived: Crash Near Rice Leaves One Dead

UPDATE: Additional witness statements and further examination of the physical evidence from the accident revealed that 79-year-old Carol Theis proceeded into the intersection without first stopping at the stop sign.

A crash involving a car and a semi-truck has left one person dead and another with serious injuries. The accident occurred at the intersection of Benton County Road 12 and Benton County Road 78 near Rice. The crash happened Tuesday morning just before 8:00 a.m.

According to the Benton County Sheriff’s office, a car driven by 79-year-old Carol Theis of Pierz was driving south on County Road 78 when she came to a stop at the intersection. After stopping, Theis failed to yield the right-of-way to a semi driving west county road 12. The semi was driven by 65-year-old Dale Scholl of Royalton. The two vehicles collided which caused significant damage to both the car and the semi.

Theis was pronounced dead at the scene and Scholl was taken to the St. Cloud Hospital for treatment of his serious but non-life threatening injuries. According to the sheriff’s office, Scholl is listed in stable condition.

The crash forced deputies to close the roads to traffic and also damaged power lines in the area. The semi was hauling corn which spilled out onto the road.

The accident is still under investigation.
