Archived: Criminal Charges Being Considered For Attack On Minnesota House Candidate

Criminal charges could potentially be filed as a result of an attack on a Minnesota House of Representatives candidate.

The Benton County Sheriff’s Office says the case of reported assault on Shane Mekeland has been forwarded to the Benton County Attorney’s Office.

Under Minnesota law, the assault as described by Mekeland would qualify as misdemeanor assault. It could potentially qualify as a felony if the injuries Mekeland sustained caused "substantial bodily harm." Authorities would have to obtain his medical records for a felony to be charged.

On Friday, October 12, Mekeland was discussing politics with a man. According to Mekeland, the conversation was smooth until the man took offense to something he said and punched him in the face. Mekeland suffered minor injuries but did not go to the hospital. The suspect was identified but not arrested.

An investigation was launched by authorities as they interviewed Mekeland, the suspect, and identifiable witnesses, while compiling relevant evidence.

The Benton County Attorney’s Office will review the investigation and make a decision.
