Archived: Devil’s Kettle Water Flow Mystery Solved

The Devil’s Kettle Waterfall mystery in Grand Marais, the waterfall famous for splitting into two steams and disappearing, has been solved.

Along Lake Superior’s North Shore, the Brule River splits into many streams as it flows downhill. At one point half of the stream spills into a hole in the earth, which is the Devil’s Kettle.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says the water does not vanish, but instead renters the river downstream.

Hydrologist Jeff Green says “The readings show no loss of water below the kettle, so it confirms the water is resurging in the stream below it.”

In the Fall, Green’s team will pour a fluorescent dye into the kettle to find out where it renters the stream.

A field report and pictures can be found here from the DNR.
