Archived: Former SCSU Physics Professor Discusses Instrument To Be Used In Satellite Mission

A former professor at St. Cloud State University is being recognized for his work measuring winds and temperatures in the Earth’s atmosphere.

John Harlander was a physics professor, and took part in a three-person Facebook Live presentation at the American Geophysical Union fall meeting last December. The organization is a nonprofit with members from 144 countries. Last year’s meeting took place in San Francisco.

Harlander and his students are recognized for designing, fabricating and testing an optical instrument, called MIGHTI. It helps test wind and temperatures in an upper layer of the atmosphere, called the thermosphere.

Now, MIGHTI is going to be part of a satellite mission in June over the Pacific Ocean. The mission is overseen by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory.
