Archived: Frostbitten UMD Student To Transfer To St. Cloud Hospital For Further Rehab

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (AP) – A University of Minnesota-Duluth student who nearly froze to death after spending a night outside plans to move to St. Cloud Hospital to continue her rehabilitation closer to home.

The St. Cloud Times reports, Alyssa Jo Lommel is expected to move from Regions Hospital in St. Paul to the St. Cloud hospital Monday.

The 19-year-old woman suffered severe frostbite and hypothermia after a night outdoors in Duluth when temperatures dropped to minus-17. Police say she had been out drinking with friends, was dropped off, but never made it inside.

Parts of her hands and feet were amputated due to severe frostbite.

Lommel’s mother, Teri, wrote on the family’s CaringBridge site that she pushed for Lommel to be moved to a hospital closer to the family’s home in St. Cloud.
