Archived: Grandson Of Missing Paynesville Couple Charged With 2nd Degree Murder

Authorities say an elderly Paynesville couple that died after being reported missing last week were murdered.

Stearns County Sheriff Don Gudmundson says 93-year-old Wilbert Scheel and 80-year-old Gloria Scheel couldn’t be found last Thursday after missing a dinner appointment. After a multi-county effort the Scheel’s missing car was found on a rural road with two bodies inside. The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office has tentatively identified the death of Wilbert and Gloria a homicide.

Their grandson, 33-year-old Gregory Scheel, was also reported missing. After the Scheel’s bodies were discovered Kandiyohi County authorities found Gregory south of the car. He was taken to Kandiyohi County Jail on unrelated charges and interviewed.

On March 23, it was determined that probable cause existed to arrest Scheel with two counts of intentional 2nd degree murder. Scheel is currently being held in the Stearns County Jail.
