Archived: Meeting To Discuss Next Steps For District 742 Buildings Rescheduled To Next Week

A meeting to make future plans for St. Cloud School District 742 after the referendum failed has been rescheduled.

On Election Day November 3, more than 8,000 people voted against the referendum, according to data from the Minnesota School Board Association. The referendum proposed approximately $167,000,000 to build a new Tech High School, remodel Apollo High School and renovate other district buildings.

Cindy Harner is the co-chair for Neighbors for School Excellence. She says a committee planned to meet Friday to talk about what’s next for the district, but the meeting has been rescheduled for mid-next week.

The discussion will involve Barclay Carriar, also co-chair, and members from the school board and community.

Harner previously shared with KVSC that estimates for deferred maintenance for Tech and Apollo is upwards of $140,000,000. Similar estimates also came from District 742 Superintendent Willie Jett. He spoke with KVSC before Election Day saying approximately $130,000,000 to $140,000,000 would be spent to maintain the two buildings if the referendum failed. This amount will cost taxpayers over an estimated 10 year period.
