Archived: New Survey Says 85 Percent of Regional Drivers Wear Seat Belts

A new seat belt compliance survey says 85 percent of drivers in the East Central Minnesota region wear their seat belts. The survey was done by traffic safety advocates in late August. They observed drivers in 12 counties. The survey is a part of the state’s Toward Zero Death’s traffic safety initiative.

Minnesota State Patrol Captain Al Kutz says it’s important to continue to educate area motorists on the importance of buckling up. He says the ultimate goal is 100 percent compliance..

Minnesota first passed a law requiring drivers to wear seat belts in 1986. According to the Department of Public Safety seat compliance at that time was only 20 percent.
