Archived: Pipe Bomb Detonated By Bomb Squad

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (AP) – Some residents in St. Cloud were evacuated after a suspicious object was found.

The St. Cloud Times reports police were monitoring the area for much of the day after the item was reported late morning Saturday morning. The Crow Wing County bomb squad destroyed the item at about 4:45 p.m. and police say it did contain explosives.

They were not releasing any other details. St. Cloud resident Corey Gaulrapp says he discovered the item, which he said he believes is a pipe bomb. He described the object as heavy and white with a fuse.

He says he picked up the object before realizing what it was and called police between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.

According to police, the item was consistent with a "cricket" bomb, or an explosive device made from an empty CO2 cartridge.  The device did not contain any shrapnel and had a non-timer type fuse.

Police are still investigating.
