Archived: SCPD Offers Advice On How To Avoid Identity Theft During Tax Season

Now that tax season is upon us, it’s important to watch your mailbox closely to avoid W-2 form theft.

The St. Cloud Police Department says identity theft is a major issue during tax season because thieves know personal information is delivered in the mail. If someone steals your W-2 form, they can file a bogus return and collect the refund check from the International Revenue Service, or open credit card, bank or other accounts with personal information.

To avoid identity theft, the SCPD recommends electronic W-2 forms. However, if you must receive your tax documents through the mail, make sure to check your mailbox every day and ask a trusted neighbor to watch out for stealing.

If you’ll be gone for an extended time, ask a friend to pick it up, have the post office hold your mail or rent a post office box.
