Archived: St. Cloud Archaelogy Students Uncover Remnants Of 150-Year-Old Military Fort

St. Cloud State archaeology students have uncovered artifacts from a Civil War-era fort.

St. Cloud State TODAY says some discovered items include a metal buckle for an officer’s gun sling, ceramic dishes from that time period, and glass shards from the building’s structure.

The archaeological investigation has taken place near a stone marker by Birch Street and Seventh Avenue in Sauk Centre. It is run by St. Cloud State University associate professor Rob Mann and his students.

The fort was made in the aftermath of the U.S-Dakota War in 1862. Not much is known about military sites built in this era, which makes this research so valuable.

The building was only occupied for three years, as the U.S Army moved west in late 1865.
