AVON, Minn. (AP) – A Stearns County lake association has completed a $4,000 herbicide treatment to slow the spread of an invasive plant.

The St. Cloud Times reports the Middle Spunk Lake Association finished the chemical treatment of the lake last week. The State Department of Natural Resources confirmed the presence of Eurasian milfoil there in July.

The 236-acre lake is part of the three-lake Spunk chain in Avon. The DNR says milfoil was found rooted in about five acres to a depth of almost 12 feet. It can form dense mats that crowd out native plants and clog boat propellers.

The association received a 2,000 dollar grant from the DNR and has raised about 1,250 dollars for the treatment.

A member says the milfoil has generated renewed interest in lake water quality among the once-dormant association.
