Archived: Supporters Of Convicted Killer Byron Smith Meet To Discuss Reversing The Jury’s Verdict
LITTLE FALLS, Minn. (AP) – Nearly a year after a Little Falls homeowner was found guilty of fatally shooting two teenage intruders, those who believe he was wrongly convicted meet regularly to strategize on how to reverse the jury’s verdict.
Prosecutors portrayed Byron Smith as a vigilante who waited for burglars to enter his house, then coldly killed 18-year-old Haile Kifer and 17-year-old Nick Brady. The 66-year-old Smith is serving a life sentence. Smith’s supporters, Citizens for Justice for Byron Smith, meet monthly at the local VFW. The group’s website says their mission is to inform the public about facts that weren’t allowed at Smith’s trial.
The Star Tribune says one of Smith’s attorneys, Steve Meshbesher, said he declined to speak to the group saying it would be inappropriate while the case is being appealed.
