Tavis Smiley To Speak At 2013 Power In Diversity Conference At SCSU

Television and radio show host Tavis Smiley is the keynote speaker of the upcoming Power in Diversity Leadership Conference at St. Cloud State University Jan. 24 through 27. In its fourth year, this year’s conference is subtitled “We Are the Change: Where Do We Go from Here?”

The conference aims to build leadership and communications skills, promote academic excellence, and reinforce education and cultural development. The Power in Diversity conference is open to all that want to take part. People wishing to attend the conference can register online or through the mail.

Smiley is the host of the public television show Tavis Smiley, and the author of 16 books. His latest book Rich and the Rest of Us: A Poverty Manifesto is co-written with philosopher and educator Cornel West.

A leading voice for LGBT community equality, Cheryl Jacques will also speak at the conference. Jacques is an administrative law judge in Mass. In the past she served as a state senator in Mass. and was the president of Human Rights Campaign, a leading LGBT advocacy group.

Author and social critic Tricia Rose will speak at the conference. Rose is the author of four books including Black Noise: Rap Music and Black Culture in Contemporary America and The Hip Hop Wars.
