Archived: Teenage Girl Charged After Fatal Crash In Elk River

A teen has been charged in the deaths of a cop and his wife for a crash that happened back in June.

The Sherburne County Attorney’s Office and the Elk River Police Department say the 17-year-old girl has been charged with two counts of criminal vehicular homicide and operating a motor vehicle in a grossly negligent manner.

She was distracted by her phone while driving a truck on Twin Lakes Road in Elk River on June 15. She drove into oncoming traffic and crashed into a motorcycle occupied by 51-year-old Steven Nanney and his wife, 51-year-old Marilyn Nanney. Both Steven and Marilyn died from their injuries.

An investigation determined the teen was going 63 miles-per-hour in a 55 mile-per-hour zone. She explained that her phone had vibrated and that she was checking to see if it was a call or a text.

The first court date will be scheduled in the near future.
