UMD Frostbitten Student Alyssa Lommel Undergoes Additional Amputations

DULUTH, Minn. (AP) - The University of Minnesota Duluth student recovering from severe frostbite has undergone another amputation surgery.

Alyssa Lommel's mother, Teri, posted on her daughter's CaringBridge website that doctors were unable to save any of her fingers or thumbs. WDIO-TV reports Lommel's mother says surgeons found more tissue damage than expected and had to amputate just below the knuckles of both hands.

The 19-year-old St. Cloud native suffered severe frostbite and hypothermia after a night outdoors in Duluth when temperatures dropped to minus-17. Police say the college sophomore had been out drinking with friends, was dropped off, but never made it inside.

Lommel earlier had some tips on her toes removed, as well as part of one foot. Her mother writes that her daughter should be able to walk normally.

SCSU To Host Power In Diversity Leadership Conference

St. Cloud State University will host its fifth annual Power in Diversity Leadership Conference starting January 23.

This year’s conference, Today’s Vision: Tomorrow’s Reality, will provide leadership opportunities for college students of color and other underrepresented groups of students through workshops and speakers.

Among the many keynote speakers, the conference will host actress and writer Laverne Cox, award winning investigative journalist Jeff Johnson and nation speaker Joshua Fredenburg.

The four day conference will provide leadership activities for those attending.

 

Vehicle Crash On Highway 23 Leaves One Dead

One man is dead after his truck was broadsided by a semi-tractor Tuesday night.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a truck driven by 29-year-old Shane Keranen was trying to cross Highway 23 after exiting West Bound Interstate 94 when his truck was hit by a semi-tractor. Keranen died from his injuries suffered in the crash.

The condition of the semi driver, 67-year-old Dennis Dahlin, has not been released.

The Minnesota State Patrol was assisted by the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office and the Waite Park Police Department.

UPDATED: Suspect Information in Liberty Savings Bank Robbery in St. Cloud

 

The Liberty Saving Bank on Ridgewood Road in St. Cloud was robbed Friday morning. St. Cloud police were called at 9:09 a.m. Their investigation indicates that a man entered the bank, demanded money from the teller and left. He did not display a weapon and no one was injured. The suspect was given an undisclosed amount of money.

He is described as being 5' 8'' to 5-10" tall with husky build. He was wearing a ski mask and a winter jacket at the time of the robbery. The suspect ran in a southwest direction through the parking lot. Police have been using their K9 unit to try to track the suspect but he has not been located.

Law enforcement from Waite Park and Stearns County assisted with the perimeter control and the F.B.I. is assisting with the investigation.

At the time of the robbery, Westwood Elementary School was in containment security mode for just over an hour. Police. Burke says the school’s resource officers searched the school and no suspects were found in the building.

Police are seeking tips from the public at 251-1200 or via Tri-County Crimestoppers at 255-1301.

Absentee Voting For District 5 Commissioner Open For Extended Hours

Stearns County Auditor-Treasurer Randy Schreifels wants to remind District 5 voters, polls will be open extra hours for absentee voting in Melrose and St. Cloud.

Residents may cast their absentee ballots in downtown St. Cloud at the Courthouse Square in the County Administration Building Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Citizens of District 5 may also turn in their absentee ballots during normal office hours at the Melrose City Clerk’s Office from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.  The City Clerk’s Office will also be open Saturday, January 25th until 3:00 p.m.

The last day to vote via absentee ballot is Monday, January 27th for the District 5 Commissioner election that will be held on Tuesday, January 28th.

Elk River Man Is Dead After Being Struck By Northstar Commuter Train

ELK RIVER, Minn. (AP) - A man has been struck and killed by a Northstar commuter train near Elk River.

Sherburne County Sheriff Joel Brott says the man was walking on the tracks just north of the intersection of 192nd Avenue NW and Zebulon Street when he was struck about 4:45 p.m. Monday.

The sheriff says in a statement that the gate arms at the intersection were down, and the train stopped a short distance past the intersection after striking the man.

His name has not been released.

Passengers were taken to their destinations by other trains and buses while the line was shut down. The Sherburne County Sheriff's Office and Metro Transit Police are investigating.

John Siqveland of Metro Transit says it's the second fatality involving a Northstar train since service started in 2009.

Metro Bus To Extend Bus Services To New Urgency Center

CentraCare Health Plaza will be receiving additional bus services due to the opening of the new Urgency Center today (Monday).

Metro Bus route 32 will be servicing the bus stop outside the health plaza weekdays until 8:13 p.m. and weekends until 5:13 p.m. The added service is designed to provide more people with access to the brand new urgent center.

The route currently serves the city of Sartell, including Walmart and the Medical Arts Campus.

A Man Accidentally Shoots His Hand After Attempting To Clear Firearm

A man suffered a gunshot wound to his hand after accidentally shooting himself Sunday night.

According to St. Cloud Police, 26-year-old Mark Garrett Blankenship was attempting to clear his firearm when he accidentally shot himself in the hand. Blankenship has a permit to carry out of Arizona.

No other injuries were reported during the incident. The Stearns County Attorney office will be reviewing charges against Blankenship.

A 17-Year-Old Boy Is Facing Multiple Charges After Allegedly Assaulting A Boy Saturday

A juvenile is facing multiple charges including 3rd degree assault and aggravated robbery after allegedly assaulting and taking cash from a teenager and threatening to harm another with a knife.

According to St. Cloud police, a 17-year-old boy was arrested Saturday night after another 17-year-old boy contacted police and said the suspect took cash from him after he was assaulted. The victim was later taken to the St. Cloud hospital and treated for minor injuries.

A second victim, a 17-year-old boy, said he was threatened with a knife during the incident.

The case is currently under investigation and no other details are available at this time.

Information From A Hit And Run Needed By St. Cloud Police

St. Cloud Police is asking for your help with information of a hit and run that happened early Monday morning on 9th avenue at 13th Street South in St. Cloud.  

According to St. Cloud Police Sergeant Jason Burke, a vehicle driven by a 32-year-old man was struck by what is described as a late 80’s to early 90’s silver Ford Crown Victoria. The man was later taken to the St. Cloud hospital and treated for his non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect’s vehicle should have its driver’s side tail light out. It should also have damage to the front end with the front hood not closing all the way.

Anyone with information regarding the hit and run is asked to contact the St. Cloud Police Department at 251-1200 or the Tri-County Crimestoppers at 255-1301.

Sauk Rapids Police Canine Tracks Down Man Who Fled Police

A Sauk Rapids police canine caught a 46-year-old man who was fleeing police on foot early Friday morning in Sauk Rapids.

Sauk Rapids police chief Perry Beise, Dean Arnold Gangl the driver of a vehicle pulled over for a routine traffic stop by Sauk Rapids Police just after 2:00 a.m.  Gangl ditched the vehicle, running and hiding in a neighborhood off Benton Drive North and Highway 15.

Officers set up a perimeter and used police dog Storm to track and find Gangl.

Gangl was arrested on a Felony Domestic Assault and Terroristic Threats warrant. He was also arrested for Fleeing Police, a felony.

Gangl was taken to the St. Cloud Hospital for minor injuries then booked into the Stearns County Jail, where he awaits more charges from Sauk Rapids Police.

Police Search In Sauk Rapids Turns Up Meth And Guns

The Central Minnesota Violent Offender Task Force conducted a search warrant for controlled substances in Benton County Wednesday night.

According to the Benton County Sheriff’s Department, the warrant was for the residence at 2400 Golden Spike Road in Sauk Rapids.

Law enforcement found numerous items and paraphernalia for the sale and use of methamphetamine. Also found in the residence was an undetermined amount of meth and multiple guns.

During the search the 33-year-old Lazaro Diaz was at the residence and was arrested on probable cause charges related to a stabbing from several weeks ago in St. Cloud. Diaz was taken to the Stearns County Jail and is awaiting formal charges.

19-year-old Melanie Quick of Willmar was also arrested on scene for outstanding warrants from Todd and Benton Counties. Quick was brought to the Benton County Jail.

Additional charges resulting from the search warrant are still pending.

SCSU And The Surrounding Community To Hold Breakfast Monday Honoring Martin Luther King Jr.

St. Cloud State University coupled with the St. Cloud community will come together to honor the life of Martin Luther King, Jr., with a breakfast event Monday.

One of the event’s organizers, Pastor Randy Johnson of First United Methodist, spoke about the details of the breakfast and what he hopes the community learns from the event speakers.

The breakfast will be held in the Atwood Center Ballroom from 7 a.m. until 11 a.m. on the SCSU campus.
