Highway 238 Near Albany Construction Project To Begin In January

Tree removal near Albany will slow and delay drivers in late January.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation says crews will remove trees along Highway 238 between Railroad Avenue and Auer Avenue during the week of January 22. The segments will have single lane traffic and flag holders allowing one-way traffic.

The project is the first part to reconstruct Highway 238 to add new utilities, improved drainage and pedestrian accessibility. For more information on the project visit the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Electrical Issues Starts Garage Fire In Maine Prairie Township

A Saturday morning fire in Maine Prairie Township near Kimball put a homeowner in the hospital.

Stearns County Sheriff Don Gudmundson says at about 6:40 a.m. 38-year-old Adam David Molitor and 39-year old Jennifer Lynne Molitorfound an electrical issue in their garage and then discovered the fire in the garage attic. Their home is located 9241 155th Street in Maine Prairie Township.

An unidentified homeowner attempted to put out the fire. The family was able to safely get their three children out of the home.

One of the homeowners was taken to St. Cloud Hospital for smoke inhalation. The fire damage was only inside the garage.

Three Teens Injured In Rollover Near Clearwater

Three teenagers were found in an upside down car along County Road 145 by the Stearns County Sheriff's Department.

Sheriff Don Gudmundson reported that around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday that a sports car drove off of a curve on County Road 145 and 188th Street East in Lynden Township near Clearwater. The car, driven by 18-year-old Tyler Abfalter of Annandale, was heading north when he went into the ditch. There were two passengers in the car.

Abfalter, 18-year-old Kayla Hauwiller, and 17-year-old Jaitwan Smith were brought to St. Cloud Hospital to have their injuries evaluated.

The sheriff's office believes that Abfalter was driving at excessive speeds. Gold Cross Ambulance and the Clearwater Fire Department assisted the Stearns County Sheriff's Office.

SCSU Hosts Author On WWII Resistance Group

St. Cloud State University will host a speaker to talk about the World War II group “The White Rose.”

University spokeswoman Anna Kurth says author Jud Newborn will recount their experiences of struggling to battle Nazi Germany from “Speaking Truth to Power.” The White Rose was a non-violent group who today risks themselves for freedom and shared humanity.

The presentation will be on January 24, at 7 p.m. in Ritsche Auditorium in Stewart Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

The SCSU Center for Holocaust and Genocide Education is a key sponsor of this event, in commemoration of International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Car Fire West Of Sartell Closes Road

A Friday morning car fire temporarily closed one road in Le Sauk Township, west of Sartell.

Stearns County Sheriff Don Gudmundson says at approximately 6:18 a.m. 48-year-old Joseph Michael Sowada of Albany was driving on 30th Avenue North when his car backfired multiple times, his engine started smoking, then a small fire quickly turned into a big fire. The fire closed down 30th Avenue North for an hour and a half.

Crews were able to extinguish the fire and Sowada had no injuries, the car was a total loss.

St. Cloud Mayor Dave Kleis Promotes Fitness At Second Town Hall

St. Cloud Mayor Dave Kleis will be holding his second town hall meeting of the year, with a twist.

The Mayor’s office says to kick off 2018 New Year’s resolutions, Kleis will hold his town hall meeting “on the bikes” at the St. Cloud Community Aquatics Center & YMCA. People are encouraged to attend to discuss city issues and concerns and to fulfill their resolutions.

The meeting will be held Tuesday, January 9 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Dave Bentrud Announces Hid Bid For Stearns County Sheriff

The Waite Park Police Chief has put in his bid to become the Stearns County Sheriff.

Dave Bentrud says he will run in 2018 to try to replace Don Gudmundson, the current interim sheriff. Gudmundson is not seeking to become the permanent sheriff, he took the post on a temporary basis after John Sanner retired.

Bentrud has 25 years of law enforcement experience in Stearns County and says he strongly believes we can enhance services in Stearns County by working together. He has been the Waite Park Police Chief since 2008, prior to that he was a Police Sergeant with the St. Cloud Police Department.

Elections in Minnesota will take place on Tuesday, November 6.

Waite Park Police Say Man Passed Out In His Vehicle, While in Turn Lane

A man in Waite Park was arrested on last Thursday for allegedly driving his vehicle drunk.

Waite Park Police say at around 3:30 p.m. a caller told police that a man was passed out in the left turn lane. The caller then banged on the window, waking up 38-year-old Michael Richard Lemke of St. Cloud. Lemke rolled through the intersection and struck the median, Lemke then kept driving. Officers located Lemke and prevented him from continuing to drive.

He was tested and arrested for 1st Degree Felony DWI from prior arrests. He is currently being held in the Stearns County Jail.

Waite Park Police Chase Reaches Speeds Of 90 MPH

A Monday night car chase in Waite Park led to an arrest in St. Cloud.

Waite Park Police say just before midnight, officers noticed an SUV driving with its bright lights on. The officer flashed their lights and the SUV slowed for a red light on Highway 23 but then drove through it. Officers followed the car to St. Cloud reaching speeds of 90 miles-per-hour. The SUV also hit the Hanson Flooring building on Osseo Avenue, causing minor damage.

The driver was stopped when one officer performed a PIT maneuver. Officers were then able to arrest 31-year-old Scott Solon Schaefer-Bonovsky of St. Cloud. Schaefer-Bonovsky admitted to taking methamphetamines and was taken to St. Cloud Hospital.

Schaefer-Bonovsky is currently being held in the Stearns County Jail on charge of felony fleeing police in a motor vehicle, 4th degree controlled substance DWI, driving after revocation and a controlled substance felony warrant.

New Year's Day Fire In Roscoe Under Investigation

A New Year’s Day house fire has one couple and firefighters looking for answers.

Stearns County Sheriff Don Gudmundson says at 10 a.m. on Monday, 21-year-old Juevnal Martinez Martinez of Roscoe called about a house fire. Officers arrived to find the home fully engulfed in flames. Crews worked quickly to put out the blaze.

Homeowner 65-year-old Arturo Rodriguez Garcia of Roscoe was not home during the fire. No injuries were reported and the cause is still under investigation.

Rollover On Highway 10 Near Albany Township

Slippery conditions Tuesday afternoon landed a car in the ditch.

Stearns County Sheriff Don Gudmundson says 23-year-old Brett Adam Rickert-Shepard was driving on County Road 10 near Albany when Rickert-Shepard slid off of a curve on the road into the ditch. His car rolled when it hit a culvert, hitting a utility pole and landing on the hood.

Rickert-Shepard was able to exit the vehicle and was taken to St. Cloud Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Mayor Sets First St. Cloud Town Hall Meeting of 2018

St. Cloud Mayor Dave Kleis will be hosting a Town Hall Meeting.

The Mayor’s Office says this meeting will be at Kleis’s office in City Hall. All people are encouraged to come and be active in discussion of city issues and concerns.

The meeting will be Tuesday, January 2, from 9 to 10 a.m.

New Year's Eve Candlelight Hike Rescheduled Due To Extreme Cold

The New Year’s Eve Candlelight Hike in Little Falls scheduled for Sunday has been cancelled.

Spokeswoman Mary Warner says forecast extreme cold temperatures will make it dangerous for hikers. The hike has been rescheduled for Saturday, January 6.

The hike will take place from 5-8 p.m. on trails lit by luminaries and can visit the Charles A. Lindbergh House and museum and the Charles A. Weyerhaeuser Memorial Museum. The event is open to the public.

Foley Police Discover Person Dead In Car

A Wednesday night welfare check led police to find a dead person in Foley.

Police Chief Katie McMillin says at approximately 11:10 p.m. Foley police were called to the 100 block of Glen Street to check on a person who appeared to be asleep in their car. Officers then found the person was deceased. Investigators believe the death was caused by a self-inflicted injury and at this time, they have not released any further details.

The victim was taken to the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office for continued investigation. Police say there is no danger to the public.

Habitat For Humanity Names New Director To Lead St. Cloud

Central Minnesota Habitat for Humanity has announced a new executive director.

Spokeswoman Alicia Chapman says Rick Nelson will now serve as executive director for the CMHFH. Nelson plans to sustain and grow the organization’s impact. Nelson says he is so glad for the opportunity to lead a nonprofit organization within the greater St. Cloud community.

Habitat for Humanity works to make home ownership affordable for families through donors and volunteers. Nelson will lead the 28-year-old organization starting in 2018.
