The #12-ranked SCSU men's hockey team split a pair of games in Duluth over the weekend at AMSOIL Arena. The University of Minnesota-Duluth prevailed 2-1 on Friday night before the Huskies got revenge with a 5-1 win on Saturday.
St. Cloud State got off to a fast start Friday with freshman Kalle Kossila's early goal that gave SCSU a 1-0 lead. The Finnish frosh scored for the fifth time this season, assisted by Andrew Prochno and Jonny Brodzinski.
The Bulldogs scored the go-ahead goal on a power play early in the third period, then held off a late SCSU rally for the 2-1 win. The victory was UMD's first WCHA win of the season.
On Saturday the Huskies came out firing on all cylinders. Senior captain Ben Hanowski scored a power play goal halfway through the second period to give SCSU the early lead. Nic Dowd scored the eventual game-winner just four minutes later as the Huskies took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
Kossila and Dowd each registered second period goals to make the score 4-1 after two periods of play. Cory Thorson finished the scoring for the Huskies in the third period. When the dust settled Hanowski (goal, two assists) and Dowd (two goals, assist) each had three points and sophomore goaltender Ryan Faragher had 32 saves to earn his sixth win of the season.
SCSU will make their last WCHA trip to Alaska this weekend to take on the Seawolves. KVSCHockey on Twitter will have updates of the game in progress.
