After the Fireworks...A Spilt
01/31/2010 - 8:00 AM
After tempers died down and the dust settled, it was a series spilt for the Saint Cloud State Men's Hockey team. The series saw Colorado College and the Huskies combine for 19 goals and each team pick up two points in a very crowded WCHA conference.
The Huskies won their 9th game in a row on Friday night with a 5-4 win behind two David Eddy goals and three points each for Ryan Lasch and Aaron Marvin. It was a back and forth series that had each team taking turns with the lead both nights but the end result on Saturday had the Huskies' winning streak come to an end. Garrett Roe's two goals and three points were not enough as the Tigers took the finale 6-4, although not without some controversy. The Huskies thought they had tied the score at 5-5 with 1:30 left in the 3rd period but the goal was wavied off because the referee lost sight of the puck and blew the play dead.
After the game head coach Bob Motzko was visibly angry with the call by the referee and has held back in his discussion by the other members of the officiating crew. The Huskies were given a team unsportsmanlike conduct and game misconduct penalty at the end of the game as well for the heated exchange.
With the spilt, the Huskies find themselves in 3rd place in the WCHA conference with an overall record of 17-8-3 but just two points behind Denver for the top spot. The Huskies are currently 4th as well in the pairwise rankings which try and mimic the guidelines used by the NCAA to figure out the national tournament field.
SCSU returns home this weekend for more WCHA play against Alaska Anchorage. Listen to the games both nights on KVSC with puck drop at 7:07 p.m. on Friday and 5:07 p.m. on Saturday.
