Christian's OT Winner Helps SCSU Men's Hockey Earn Split with #8 CC Tigers
01/14/2012 - 7:00 AM
Head coach Bob Motzko praised senior Jordy Christian this past week for his hard work and leadership. Christian rewarded his coach’s kind words Saturday night in Colorado Springs when he scored 2:30 into overtime to give St. Cloud State a 5-4 win over Colorado College to help earn SCSU a split with the #8 Tigers.
Christian’s goal came after St. Cloud had blown a two-goal lead late in the third period. The Huskies held a 4-2 lead after a David Eddy goal, but allowed CC to strike twice in the game’s final minutes to force OT. Christian was the savor for the Huskies however, scoring his second goal of the season from Brooks Bertsch and Sam Zabkowicz to give SCSU the win, and keep them one point behind sixth ranked UND in WCHA in the race for home ice advantage. Garrett Milan notched his first NCAA goal, and Jared Festler and Nic Dowd also scored for SCSU in the win.
CC took game one Friday by a score of 3-1. The Huskies lone goal came from Nick Jensen in the second period. St. Cloud had a controversial goal disallowed that would have tied the game 2-2 in the second period off the tape of Kevin Gravel, but it was ruled Eddy’s stick had hit CC goaltender Josh Thorimbert’s mask and caused interference.
With the weekend split, the Huskies now sit at 9-11-4 overall and 6-7-3 in the WCHA. SCSU is in seventh place with 15 points in the conference.
The team directly ahead of them and their rival North Dakota visit the National Hockey Center this weekend. Puck drop is slated for 7:37 Friday and 7:07 Saturday. Students will need to pick up tickets in advance for this series beginning at 9 A.M. on Tuesday at the NHC Ticket Office. Our Zack Fisch and Dave Overlund will have the call of the series this weekend right here on KVSC.
