Hanowski, LeBlanc Report to NHL
04/15/2013 - 1:30 AM
Seniors Ben Hanowski and Drew LeBlanc saw their careers in the cardinal red, black and white end at the NCAA Frozen Four on Thursday in Pittsburgh. However, their hockey season will continue. Both have signed NHL contracts. Hanowski is now a member of the Calgary Flames organization while LeBlanc will report to the Chicago Blackhawks.
Hanowski will make his NHL debut tonight (Monday) as the Calgary Flames host the Minnesota Wild. He’ll be wearing the number 58 jersey. Hanowski was a Pittsburgh draft pick until March 27 when the Flames and Penguins made a trade for Jarome Iginla in return for Hanowski and Yale forward Kenny Agostino. Hanowski inked a contract with the Flames on Friday morning after the Huskies ended their season with a 4-1 loss to Quinnipiac in the Frozen Four. Hanowski has signed a two-year entry-level contract with the organization with an annual value of $900,000.
**Update** In the game on Monday night Ben Hanowski netted his first NHL goal. The Flames fell to the Wild by a final score of 4-3.
LeBlanc, a NHL free agent, announced on Friday evening following acceptance of the Hobey Baker that he had signed with the Chicago Blackhawks. It’s a one-year deal and he will wear number 14 during his tenure with the team. LeBlanc tweeted earlier today “I appreciate everyone wishing me luck in tonight’s game, but I’ll be a spectator for a while before I get to play.” Follow us on Twitter for the latest updates during the start of the two legendary Huskies NHL careers as well as other news and notes about SCSU hockey.
