09/16/2009 - 11:11 AM
Bret Hedican, the former North Saint Paul and Saint Cloud State star, has retired from the National Hockey League after 17 years of playing. The 39-year-old Hedican was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in 1988 and played in over a thousand NHL games for the Blues, Vancouver Canucks, Florida Panthers, Carolina Hurricanes and most recently the Anaheim Ducks.
The smooth skating defenseman won a Stanley Cup with the Hurricanes in 2006 alongside another former Husky, Matt Cullen. Hedican played in 108 playoff games total and also was a member of the 1992 and 1996 United States Olympic team. In his Husky career Hedican set the season record for goals by a defenseman with 18 in the 1990-1991.
