The #1 seeded SCSU men's and women's basketball teams were both eliminated from the NSIC/Sanford Heath Tournament in the second round. Winona State upset the lady Huskies 47-45 on Saturday afternoon. St. Cloud State kept it close in the final minute exchanging the lead two times. SCSU trailed by two points with seven seconds remaining and could not get a shot off in the waning seconds at Halenbeck Hall. SCSU was led by Jessica Benson's 14 points while Senior guard Nicole Anderson netted 12 points and hauled in a game high nine boards. Anderson also collected four steals in the loss to put her fourth on the all-time SCSU steals list. It was the final game at Halenbeck Hall for seniors Nicole Anderson, Amanda Wagner, Jamie Noonan, Morgan Lof and Reyan Robinson. Three members of the SCSU women’s basketball team received NSIC All-Conference honors; Jessica Benson, Sam Price and Nicole Anderson.

The Men, also seeded #1 in the postseason were no match for the Upper Iowa Peacocks. The Huskies got down early and never regained momentum. Upper Iowa controlled every facet of the game by shooting 50 percent from the field and netting 12 of 14 free throws. Upper Iowa also outrebounded the Huskies 36-28. SCSU trailed by 20 points twice in the second half and fell 72-55. The loss drops the NSIC North Division Champions to 20-8 on the season. The Huskies were led in scoring by Shaun Jenson who finished the contest with 17 points.

It is possible that both teams may still have some life left in their season, but must wait to see their fate. The NSIC, the Great American Conference and the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association make up the NCAA Central Region this year. The top eight teams in the 42-team region will advance to the NCAA region tournament on March 16, 17 & 19. Automatic bids are granted to the winners of the NSIC and MIAA postseason tournaments, with the remaining six spots are awarded on an at-large basis. The GAC does not have an automatic bid this season. The NCAA Men's Basketball Selection Show is set for 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 10.
