Huskies Hang with Gophers

The final weekend in February marked the regular season finale for the St Cloud State women’s hockey team. The regular season ended the same way it started, versus the Minnesota Golden Gophers. The Gophers came to the National Hockey and Event Center ranked #1 in the country and brought with them a 40 game winning streak. The Gophers had intentions of becoming the first team in WCHA history to finish the regular season undefeated. The weekend also marked the home series the eight SCSU seniors would endure: Haylea Schmid, Alex Nelson, Kylie Lane, Anna Donlan, Ellie Sitek, Katie Allen, Callie Dahl & Lisa Martinson gave everything they had in front of the home crowd. The Huskies played on front of over 300 fans on Friday and over 500 on Saturday as they looked to snap the Gophers streak.
In both games the Huskies battled the Gophers to a scoreless tie in the opening period. In the second period during both match ups the Gophers would find the net to take the lead. The Huskies played inspired and had opportunities of their own. The major downfall for the Huskies was penalties, giving the Gophers 14 power play opportunities over the weekend. Head coach Jeff Geisen told KVSC during his postgame press conference on Saturday that the penalties hurt them. “The unfortunate thing is that we had to kill that many (penalties), but our penalty killers did a good job and Julie (Friend) did a god job of helping us kill those off but you can’t put a team that is 40 and 0 coming into the weekend and give them 29 minutes in penalties, that’s over half the game that we are trying to play on our heels against a lower division team which is what we are right now, we can’t put ourselves in that situation.”
SCSU dropped both games over the weekend to the Golden Gophers 2-0 on Friday and 3-0 on Saturday. The Gophers end the regular season undefeated and will host Bemidji State in the opening round of the WCHA playoffs while the Huskies will travel to Madison, Wisconsin to face off versus the second seeded Wisconsin Badgers. Tune into KVSC’s “Jeff Geisen Show” on Friday prior to our coverage of men’s hockey for an inside look at SCSU’s women’s hockey in the postseason.
