The St. Cloud State men’s hockey team remains undefeated on the road this season after a weekend sweep in Duluth. The Huskies played the Bulldogs for the first time in NCHC play.
Friday night the Huskies narrowly escaped with the 4-2 victory forced to battle back the first two periods. Nic Dowd notched the Huskies first goal of the game on the power play in the first period to make it 1-1. The Bulldogs got a power play goal of their own by Justin Crandall in the second to regain the lead. It was short lived however, as Kalle Kossila scored another Husky power play goal to tie things up again. Jonny Brodzinski struck just under four minutes into the third period to give the Huskies their first lead of the game. His goal proved to be the game winning goal as UMD was held off the scoreboard. Brodzinski added an empty-net goal with less than a minutes left for good measure. SCSU fought with the Bulldogs coming out on top 4-2.
Saturday’s game belonged to SCSU from the start as they scored early and often skating to a 5-1 victory. Jimmy Murray got things going for the Huskies with his first goal of the season half-way through the opening frame. SCSU kept the throttle down as Brooks Bertsch and David Morley added goals in the second period to extend the Huskies lead. Charlie Sampair scored for UMD to cut the lead to 3-1 before the buzzer sounded to end the second period. SCSU came out flying in the third as Cory Thorson netting a goal just 33 seconds into the period, extending SCSU's lead to 4-1. The final goal of the game came off Husky freshman Ryan Papa's stick to seal the deal and make the final score 5-1. The Huskies were outshot 27-20 in the contest. David Morley had a goal and two assists for three points in the game.
SCSU's defense gave up just three goals over the weekend. Senior, co-captain Kevin Gravel and goaltender Ryan Faragher both played a large part in that feat. Both have been named NCHC players of the week. Gravel is the NCHC Defenseman of the Week after blocking a pair of shots and notching three assists. He had a +5 rating on the weekend, it's the second time this season Gravel has earned the Defenseman of the Week award. The first coming after the opening weekend of play (Oct 7-13). Goaltender Ryan Faragher has also been honored this week as the Goaltender of the Week, like Gravel it's the second time this season. The first time Faragher had the honor was the week of Oct. 28-Nov. 3. Faragher posted 55 saves on the weekend, averaging 1.5 goals-against with a .948 save percentage. He played all 120 minutes in net for the Huskies during the series.
The Huskies earned six NCHC points and move to 6-1-1 in conference play and 11-1-2 overall. SCSU sits alone in the top spot of the conference. The Huskies have been ranked #1 in the USCHO poll this week, they also sit on top of the RPI rankings. Up next, SCSU hosts #10 Union (7-1-0 in ECAC play; 10-3-2 overall).
