Huskies Upset By Wayne State
11/21/2011 - 11:38 AM
The only thing as persistent as the snow falling Saturday afternoon at Husky Stadium was Wayne State running back Toney Davis, who rushed for a school-record 326 yards and five touchdowns in leading the Warriors to a 48-38 upset over the Huskies in round one of the NCAA playoffs.
The Huskies scored first after SCSU blocked a Stefan Terleckyj punt and recovered the ball on WSU’s three-yard-line. Dante Steward scored on the ensuing drive’s first play to give the Huskies a 7-0 lead halfway through the first quarter.
After a Warrior touchdown and missed extra point cut the Huskies lead to one, SCSU wide receiver Renard Robinson caught a thirty-yard, fourth-down TD pass to increase the Huskies lead to 14-6.
St. Cloud State took a 21-6 lead early in the second quarter on a Michael Walker TD scamper from two-yards-out but from that point on, it was all Warriors. Over the next 6:30, Wayne State scored 21 unanswered points to take a 27-21 lead. A Tyler Aldridge field goal for SCSU just before half cut the WSU lead to three points, but that was as close as the Huskies would get.
With the snow falling steadily beginning at about 10 AM, officials decided to take an extended halftime break to clear the snow that ultimately lasted fifty minutes.
On the Huskies second offensive possession of the second half, Aldridge had a 38-yard field-goal-attempt blocked and that seemingly seized all of the momentum the Warriors would need to seal the upset.
On SCSU’s next possession Wayne State’s Raliegh Ross took a Phil Klaphake pass sixty-eight-yards the other way for a pick-six that more or less sealed the Wayne State victory.
The Huskies finish the season with a 9-3 record.
