The SCSU women’s hockey team played their first game in a month hosting WCHA opponent Bemidji State University over the weekend. The Huskies earned a split on the weekend winning on Friday before falling to the Beavers on Saturday.
Friday’s game was exciting for various reasons, especially once the Huskies got rolling. The Huskies downed the beavers 4-2. It took until the second half of the second period to get the scoring in the game started. Michelle Burke notched her first goal of the season to put the Huskies up 1-0. Skye Kelly and Sydney Burghardt got the assist on the play to round out the points for the first two periods. The third period was action packed. BSU scored two goals in the first five minutes to take the lead. SCSU retaliated by scoring three more times to get the win. Hanna Brodt scored her first collegiate goal to tie the game up before Molli Mott scored on the power play for the game winner. Julia Gilbert scored an empty net goal to complete the win for the Huskies on Friday afternoon. Freshmen Julie Friend ended the game with 29 saves and the first win of the new year.
Saturday afternoon featured less goals but equal action as the Huskies fell 2-0. The Beavers scored the games only two goals in the second period. The Huskies worked to take back the lead in the third but were unsuccessful hitting the post twice in the final three minutes. Freshmen Katie Fitzgerald charted 29 saves for the Huskies in the 2-0 loss. The Huskies had 21 shots on goal.
The team will hit the road this weekend for a pair of WCHA games with Minnesota Duluth on Saturday and Sunday.
