Head coach of the Minnesota Lynx, Cheryl Reeve, made a visit to St. Cloud State University on Wednesday afternoon as part of the Women’s Center weekly series, Women on Wednesday. Reeve coached the Minnesota Lynx to their first ever National Championship in the 2011 season and back to the final round again during the 2012 campaign.
Reeve was on hand to share her story as a celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day and to discuss the importance of Title IX. It’s program that’s existed for 40 years and gives women an equal opportunity to participate in athletic activities. Reeve shared her gratitude for the program and encouraged everyone to remember that we (women) haven’t always had these types of opportunities. She said it’s “important to continue to shine this light” to ensure that it doesn’t disappear or go away.
Reeve also shared her journey and involvement with athletics at many levels; from playing shortstop on the boy’s baseball team as a child to her tenure at La Salle playing college basketball. She spoke of her personal goals to always be a champion no matter what the task and shared her Reeve’s Peeves to a champion. The Peeves are four words that are essential to a champion; preparation, passion, perseverance and principle.
KVSC Sports Director, Gina Carlson caught up with the Director of the Women’s Center, Jane Olsen, after the event. Olsen was delighted with the event turnout and large array of people in attendance, “It was by far our largest crowd of the semester so far.” Olsen remarked with a large smile.
