Women's Hockey Drops Two

St. Cloud State Women's hockey team hosted the University of North Dakota over the weekend. The all-time series between the teams was even coming into the weekend series at 19-19-5. The Huskies are desperate for points to aid in their climb in the WCHA standings.
UND scored the games' first two goals on Friday night early in the first period. The Huskies would strike back on a goal by Kylie Lane, her first of the season to cut the deficit to 2-1. UND answered with another opeing period goal and took a 3-1 lead into the locker while. Outshooting the Huskies 16-11 in the opening frame.
The Huskies started the second period with an early power play and found the net again, this time off of the stick of freshman Skye Kelly, marking her first goal of the season. The Huskies hung tough and trailed 3-2 but it would be short lived. UND added two more goals in the second period off the stick of Monique Lamoureux and extended their lead to 5 -2 through the first two periods of play. The Huskies matched the shots on goal with UND at 10 apiece in the period.
UND extended their lead to 6-2 in the final period as Jocelyne Lamoureux beat netminder Julie Friend for the lone goal in the final frame. Friend recorded 26 saves in the loss as the Huskies fell by a final of 2-6.
Saturday St. Cloud State came out of the gates on fire holding their own for much of the first period against the #10 ranked University of North Dakota. UND scored late in the period and took a 1-0 into the locker room. North Dakota outshot SCSU 10-9 in the frame.
The excitement would be short lived for the Huskies as UND scored short-handed early in the second period to take a 2-0 lead. The Huskies played inspired hockey throughout the rest of the period and trailed 2-0 after two periods while outshooting UND in the period 12-10.
UND put the clamps down on the Huskies in the final period, not allowing SCSU to get anything going. North Dakota scored early in the final period to take a 3-0 lead before closing out the period by blocking a majority of SCSU's shots on goal. Katie Fitzgerald stopped 28 shots for SCSU in the contest where the the team was outshot 31-28. The Huskies fell 0-3 in the Saturday matinee as UND notched a road sweep.
St. Cloud State is currently tied for 7th along with Bemidji State holding onto 13 WCHA points.The Huskies have a bye this week before welcoming the Wisconsin Badgers to the NHEC on February 8th and 9th.
