Women's Hockey Tops MSU 2-1, Earn First WCHA Win

A second period surge propelled the St. Cloud State Women's Hockey team to its first WCHA win Saturday over Minnesota State, as the Huskies beat the Mavericks 2-1.
After being blowout 6-0 the night before in the series opener from National Hockey Center, the Huskies took the ice Saturday afternoon looking to get back on track. After a scoreless first period, Lauren Barnes beat SCSU's Julie Friend over the glove to give MSU a 1-0 lead at 1:43 of the second period. That would be the last shot Friend would allow en route to her second career victory.
The Huskies responded with a surge of offense late in the period. Sydney Burghardt tied the game with her second goal of the season, knocking a Jaclyn Daggit shot past MSU's Alli Altmann. The Huskies struck again at the 17:48 mark when Alex Nelson scored on a one-timer off a beautful passing play setup by Abby Ness and Brittany Toor. Nelson's third goal of the year turned out to be the winner, as Friend stopped all nine shots she saw in the third period.
With the win, St. Cloud State is now 2-16-2 overall and 1-13-0 in WCHA. The team finished up the 2011 portion of its schedule and will take the ice again January 6-7 with a series against Ohio State from the National Hockey Center.
