Wrestling Team Brings Home Championship

The St. Cloud State University Wrestling team found success at the NWCA Division II National Duals in Springfield, Ill. The team captured the championship for the second consecutive year. The Huskies faced UNC-Pembroke to open competition then took on Upper Iowa on Saturday before advancing to the semifinal round Sunday morning. In the semifinals SCSU faced UW-Parkside and won by a score of 27-9 to advance to the championship. In the championship dual the Huskies took on Notre Dame (Ohio) and were victorious 17-15. Senior, Jacob Kahnke’s victory in the 285-pound division gave the team three points earning the victory and championship.
Andy Pekorny is the NSIC Wrestler of the week for his 2-0 performance at the tournament. He defeated two-time defending NCAA champion and number one ranked Trevor Franklin of No. 5 Upper Iowa. Pokorny also defeated Marty Carlson of Notre Dame College of Ohio by a score of 14-3 in the championship dual. He is 11-1 on the season at 133-pounds for the Huskies.
The wins extend the winning streak to 37 consecutive duals dating back to the 2010-2011 season. Next up for the Huskies is NSIC action against Minnesota State, Moorhead in Halenbeck Hall on Thursday at 7 p.m.
