The St. Cloud State baseball team named their captains for the upcoming 2012 season. Junior outfielder Brian Hansen, junior pitcher Scott Leiser and seniors Joey Benke and Logan Birr will all lead the Huskies in their 2012 campaign.

The St. Cloud State Volleyball team ended a seventeen-match losing streak by defeating the University of Mary 3-2 Saturday before dropping the season finale in straight sets to Northern State.

St. Cloud State Swimming and Diving coach Jeff Hegle has announced the captains for the 2011-12 swimming and diving season. A total of eight individuals will serve as captains for the Huskies.
The men’s swimming captains are seniors Joel Gregory and Mitch Pruss, and junior Jake Larson. Captains for the women’s swimming team are seniors Amber Alexander and Kelsey Noah, and juniors Steph Crandall and Toni Martinez.
Junior All-American Luke Weber will captain the diving squad for SCSU. Weber, already one of the most decorated divers in school history, is a four-time All-American and has been named Male Collegiate Conference Championships’ “Male Diver of the Year” the past two years.

It did not take former St. Cloud State baseball player Jordan Smith long to make an impact in the minor leagues. In his debut for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Wednesday night, Smith walked with the bases loaded in the 11th inning to give the home team a 4-3 win over Batavia.
Smith, who had a .457 batting average for SCSU this year and was drafted in the 9th round by Cleveland, went 2-for-5 with two RBI’s in the game. His first ever minor league at-bat resulted in a single.
The Scrappers are located in Niles, Ohio and play in the New York-Penn League, they are the “Single-A” affiliate of Cleveland.

His dream finally came true. After just over a week playing in the Cape Cod League, St. Cloud State third baseman Jordan Smith has signed a minor league contract with the Cleveland organization. Smith was drafted in the 9th round of the 2011 Major League Baseball Entry Draft on June 7.
The Willmar native leaves St. Cloud after an amazing two-year career with the Huskies. The 6-foot-4 Smith totaled 174 hits and 135 runs-batted-in. He also has the single season records for hits, home runs and RBI.
Smith will report to Cleveland’s minor league team, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. The team is based in eastern Ohio and plays in the Class “A” New York-Penn League, which began its season on Friday.

The Willmar native was the 278th overall pick and is the second highest pick SCSU player in team history. Dana Kiecker still is the highest pick ever as he was drafted in the 8th round by Boston in 1983.
Smith had a season to remember for the Huskies as he was named Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Player of the Year. He led SCSU with a .382 batting average, 22 doubles, seven home runs and 57 runs-batted-in.
If Smith signs with Cleveland, he will report to their rookie league team and start his professional career. KVSC Sports will keep you updated with all the MLB draft news. Day three of the draft is Wednesday with rounds 31 through 50 taking place.

One of the top summer camps in central Minnesota is back this summer as the Starz of Tomorrow Summer Camp is scheduled for June 12-15 at the Babe Ruth Baseball Complex in Waite Park.
The camp is for youth baseball players from the ages of 5 to 18 years old and will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. The camp will offer youth baseball players a chance to increase their baseball knowledge, work with experienced coaches and gain fundamental skills.

The season did not start off on the right foot for the St. Cloud River Bats as they fell in the 2011 Northwoods League season opener to the Duluth Huskies by a score of 3-1.
It was a pitcher’s duel at Wade Stadium as Duluth starter Ben Hughes stymied the River Bats offense on the night as he pitched six innings while striking out eight batters. St. Cloud starter Andy Urban pitched 5.1 innings of no-hit ball but walked two batters and gave up two earned runs to get the loss.
St. Cloud State shortstop Travis Cariveau went 1-for-4 for the River Bats in the leadoff spot. Game two of the series is tonight at 7:05.

St. Cloud State baseball coach Pat Dolan has announced that the team has signed third baseman Karl Sorensen of Maple Grove to a National Letter of Intent. Sorensen will begin attending St. Cloud State in the fall of 2011 and play baseball for the Huskies.
A fixture at the hot corner the past three years for Maple Grove, Sorensen is a two-time All Conference recipient. After hitting .416 as a sophomore and .444 as a junior, Sorensen is currently batting over .400 for the undefeated Crimson who are the top-ranked team in the state.
A linebacker as well for the football team, Sorensen will be the fourth Maple Grove on the Husky roster.

The Willmar native was named second team Daktronics All-American for an amazing spring for the St. Cloud State Huskies. It is the first time in team history that a SCSU player has earned NCAA Division 2 second team recognition from Daktronics.
Smith, who was also named 2011 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Player of the Year and Central Region Player of the Year, had a .382 batting average for St. Cloud with 78 hits, 22 doubles, seven home runs and 57 RBI.
Smith is getting ready to play in the Cape Cod League this summer for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox and expects to be drafted in June’s Major League Baseball entry draft.

Last summer the Bats went 40-28 and reached the North Division playoffs before falling to the Rochester Honkers. There will be plenty of St. Cloud flavor in tonight’s contest between the River Bats and Huskies as three SCSU baseball players are on the rosters for these two teams. Pitcher Chris Kubitz and infielder Travis Cariveau (CAR-view) play for the River Bats and outfielder Brian Hansen plays for Duluth.
First pitch tonight is at 7:05. St. Cloud’s home opener is Friday at Joe Faber Field against Duluth.

The Northwoods League is a 16-team, wood bat, collegiate summer league known all over the country for its high level of play and beautiful ballparks. Players from schools all over the country play in the league and once again this summer, St. Cloud State will be well represented.
As of May 31st, the Huskies have eight players suiting up for NWL teams this summer. Outfielder Phil Imholte will play for the Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers while fellow outfielder Brian Hansen will roam the outfield for the Duluth Huskies. Shawn Riesgraf will be in Alexandria for the second straight summer pitching for the Beetles, Riesgraf was their Opening Day starter in 2010.
Pitcher Logan Birr will be north of the border playing for the Thunder Bay Border Cats in Thunder Bay, Ontario and pitcher Chris Kubitz and infielder Travis Cariveau will play for the hometown St. Cloud River Bats.
