Husky Fan Fest to Be Held on Saturday

Husky Fan Fest will be held on Saturday, April 26 at Husky Stadium and the adjacent pay parking lot on the St. Cloud State University campus. The free event features the annual spring football youth clinic, autographs from the SCSU football and men’s hockey players and the Husky football spring scrimmage. The Penrose Cup, awarded by the National Collegiate Hockey Conference to the men’s hockey team will be on display as well as the Traveling Training Kit claimed by the Husky football team in the playoffs last season. Inflatables, other kid friendly actives and a lunch purchase option will also be available at the Fan Fest.

Events and clinic registration begin at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Husky Softball on the Road over the Weekend

The Husky softball team took to the road this weekend. SCSU played a pair of games with the University of Mary on Saturday; splitting the day with a 3-1 Husky win followed by a 9-1 loss. On Sunday the Huskies fell in both games to Minot State University by scores of 10-1 and 11-3. SCSU will be back in action on Tuesday afternoon in St. Cloud taking on the University of Minnesota Duluth.

Husky Baseball Sweeps Sioux Falls

The baseball games for the weekend, originally scheduled to be played at home were moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The Huskies did not let the hard life of travel affect their performance. The Huskies swept the University of Sioux Falls Cougars. Saturday game finals were 10-3 and 2-0. Highlights from day one include a six run fifth inning during game one, giving the Huskies a 9-0 lead and in game two senior pitcher Corey Fitzgerald threw eight innings with only three hits and striking out 11.

In game one on Sunday Mike Jurgella went 3-for-3 at the plate with one run and two RBIs as the Huskies rolled to a 6-0 victory. In game two the Huskies were victorious 3-1 sophomore Garrett Harrison pitched 6.2 innings and struck out nine batters. He's now 1-1 on the season.

The Huskies are 25-6 overall on the year and 14-3 in the NSIC. Next up, the Huskies are scheduled to take on Upper Iowa University. Those games are slated for Thursday and Friday in St. Cloud. Stay tuned via our Twitter account for game times, changes and details on our coverage.

UPDATE: Baseball games for this week have been moved to Fayette, Iowa. The Huskies will still be the home team.

Men's Golf Wins NSIC Title Again

The Husky men’s golf team captured their second straight NSIC title. The Huskies won the 54 hole tournament by 30 strokes. The title gives SCSU an automatic bid to the NCAA Super Regional in May. Junior Husky golfer, Tyler Koivisto was the individual champion finishing three over par.

Weather was not kind to the women’s golf team. The final round of the Augustana College Invite was cancelled. The Huskies finished in a tie for fifth place in a pool of 11 team.s

Softball Moves Outdoors

SCSU’s softball team was able to play outdoors at their home field this weekend. Unfortunately home field advantage was nowhere to be found. The Huskies were swept in two doubleheaders. Saturday the team fell the Augustana College 10-0 and 7-1. On Sunday Wayne State defeated the Huskies in a pair of games both with the same score of 11-0.

The Huskies hoted scheduled Bemidji State in a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon. The Huskies got after things early in game one, scoring five runs in the bottom of the second inning then advanced to a 6-5 win. In game two the Huskies hammered 14 hits in the 7-2 victory. SCSU is now 10-22-1 overall and 4-11-1 in conference play.

End of the College Hockey Season

After another exciting season of action the NCAA Division I college ice hockey season has come to a close. For the first time in Union College history the school is the NCAA DI Ice Hockey Champions. The end of the season also signals a winner in the KVSC Hockey Bracket Challenge. We'd like to congratulate cloudtown26 on the narrow victory! A look at the Top 10 can be seen below. The winner can send contact info to sports@kvsc.org to claim their prize. Thanks to everyone for participating. 

The end of the season also crowned a new Hobey Baker Award winner. Last season, St. Cloud State won the schools first Hobey Baker with Drew LeBlanc. This season, Nic Dowd, a senior co-captain of the Huskies was one of the final three candidates for the award. It's the first time in SCSU history that the Huskies have consecutive Hat Trick finalists. Dowd along with Johnny Gaudreau from Boston College and Greg Carey of St. Lawrence University made up the 2014 Hobey Hat Trick. On Friday afternoon (April 11) the award winner was announced. Johnny Gaudreau was named the award recipient, it was his second straight appearance in the Hobey Hat Trick. Soon after winning the award, Gaudreau, a Boston College junior signed with the Calgary Flames of the NHL.

Gravel Signs Amateur Agreement

The 2013-2014 co-captain of the SCSU men’s hockey team, Kevin Gravel, signed an agreement with the Manchester Monarchs of the AHL. The affiliate of the LA Kings and the same team his co-captain and roommate Nic Dowd signed with just a day sooner. In his time at SCSU Gravel was best known on the blue line, with a stellar senior season featuring 10 goals for a career total of 13. He played in 153 games during his tenure at St. Cloud State University.

Gravel will play with the team on a try-out basis in hopes of impressing those who matter for the remainder of the season and then signing on with a contract.

The Husky baseball teams were finally able to play their series with Minot State University in North Dakota over the weekend. The Huskies swept day one of play with scores of 5-4 and 12-2 for the victories. On Sunday the Huskies fell the Beavers in the first game 6-1 then rebounded big time for a 16-3 win. SCSU is now 8 and 3 in conference play and 19 and 6 overall.

The Huskies are scheduled to play the University of Minnesota Crookston on Wednesday. The home opener was set for the weekend but due to the weather it's been moved to Sioux Falls.

Softball Plays Extra Innings, Ends in a Tie

SCSU’s softball team traveled to Marshall, MN for the weekend to play the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State in a double header. In game one SCSU fell 7-5. Game two was more adventurous after 16 innings of play, the teams decided to call it quits and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

The Huskies are 7-14-2 overall this season and 1-3-2 in NSIC play. SCSU is scheduled to play the University of Sioux Falls in South Dakota this (Monday) afternoon.

Faragher Gives Up Senior Season, Signs with Anaheim

On Saturday afternoon, news broke that the starting goaltender for the St. Cloud State men’s hockey team, Ryan Faragher, will not be returning to the team next season. Faragher, a junior at SCSU played in 99 games during his career. In the 2013-2014 season Faragher went 20-9-4 with a 2.79 goals-against average and a .905 save percentag. He had 53 total wins in his career, sitting at second place in the school record book.

He signed a two-way deal with the Anaheim Ducks organization.

Dowd A Top Three Hobey Baker Finalist

Three days after the end of the men’s hockey season and just one day after inking an NHL contract SCSU men’s hockey senior co-captain, Nic Dowd has been named a Top Three Finalist for the Hobey Baker Award. The Award is given annually to the college hockey player who shows teamwork, dedication, integrity, humility and character both on and off the ice. The other two finalists for the award are Jonny Gaudreau from Boston College and Greg Carey from St. Lawrence University. It's Gaudreau's second time in the Hobey Hat Trick, he was a finalist in 2013 as well.

It’s the second consecutive season that the Huskies have a Hat Trick Finalist. Last season, Drew LeBlanc became the first Husky in history to win the prestigious honor.

The Award winner will be announced on April 11th during the Frozen Four festivities in Philadelphia, PA.

SCSU's Nic Dowd Signs With LA Kings

On Tuesday afternoon senior co-captain of the SCSU men’s hockey team, Nic Dowd, signed an entry level contract with the Los Angeles Kings of the NHL. Dowd helped lead the Huskies to their second consecutive NCAA appearance and conference title this season in his role as captain. He was honored by the NCHC as the student-athlete of the year and the defensive forward of the year, leading the league in power play goals (10). Dowd had 22 goals in 38 games this season for the Huskies. He is a Hobey Baker Award Top 10 finalists. At the end of last hockey season, Dowd turned down the opportunity to sign with the Kings.

Dowd was a seventh-round pick (No. 198) in the 2009 NHL Draft, he has signed a one-year contract with the Kings.

Women's Hockey, Giesen Contract not Renewed

On Monday afternoon St. Cloud State Athletics Director, Heather Weems announced that the contract of the head coach of the women’s hockey team would not be renewed. “We want to thank Jeff for his concern and commitment for our student-athletes and St. Cloud State. We appreciate what he has done for our program and the university,” said Weems.

Jeff Giesen has served as the head coach for eight seasons. This past season the Huskies posted four wins overall, three in the Western Collegiate Hockey Conference. Overall in his time at SCSU the Huskies had 79 wins, 178 losses and 35 ties. In conference play the Huskies were 53-148-25.

A national search will begin immediately for a new coach.

Softball Conference Season Begins

The St. Cloud State Softball team faced Winona State in the 2014 conference opener held Friday afternoon in the Husky Dome on the St. Cloud State University campus. The 20th ranked Warriors came away with a 7-2, 6-0 sweep of the Huskies. St. Cloud State is 6-13 overall and 0-2 in the NSIC.

The Huskies are scheduled to be back in action on Tuesday versus Minnesota State – Moorhead in the Husky Dome.
