Austing Dominant, Lineup Delivers as Huskies Squash #6 Kingsville
Austing struck out 11 over 5.2 scoreless frames

St. Cloud State Baseball (1-0, 0-0 NSIC) rode a dominant outing by senior Dominic Austing and clutch hitting en route to upsetting #6 Texas A&M-Kingsville (0-1, 0-0 LSC) 7-2 on Opening Day.

Austing pilfered the Javelina lineup over 5.2 scoreless innings, scattering three hits and two walks while striking out 11. The righthander picked up a whopping 17 swinging strikes on 77 pitches before exiting due to a blister in the sixth.

Junior righty Blake Flint entered the game in relief with the tying run at the plate, worked out of the jam and went the rest of the way to receive the save in his Huskies debut. Flint chartered 3.1 innings of two-run ball, striking out 5 while allowing four hits and and a walk.

The Huskies opened the scoring in the first as Jordan Joseph (1-3, 2B, R, RBI, SF, BB) walked and later scored on a Mat Meyer (2-5, R, RBI) single. Najee Gaskins (2-5, R, SB) singled in the third, then advanced to third on a wild pickoff try by Javelina starter Preston Plovanich. Joseph promptly drove the centerfielder home with a sac fly to right.

In the eighth, Mitch Mallek (1-4, R) and Meyer rapped back-to-back two-out singles before Caeden Harris (1-4, R, RBI) poked an RBI single into center. Lenny Walker (0-4, R) smoked a ground ball right through the legs of the Hogs’ third baseman, bringing in Meyer. Toran Shahidi (1-4, HR, 3 RBI) capped off the 5-run outburst by blasting a three-run home run to deep left.

Plovanich took the loss for Kingsville despite allowing just two earned runs over 6.0 frames, working around three hits and a walk while striking out 8.

St. Cloud State takes on Tarleton State on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. with Husky Den PreGame at 9:15 a.m. on the KVSC Sports Stream.
