Friday nights tilt at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center showed how hard the Huskies can bite as they use a big third period to extend their unbeaten streak at home to 11 games.

The shots for the game tilted heavily in favor of the Huskies at 31-21. Sophomore David Hrenak picks up win number 15 on the season.

The Huskies started the scoring quickly when junior Jack Poehling buried a pass from his brother junior Ryan Poehling.

The score stayed there until 2:22 into the second period when the RedHawks netted a Power Play goal. Senior Grant Hutton went bar down in a beautiful goal to tie the game up.

This didn’t last long because senior Jimmy Schuldt put a slap shot in the net to for the 104th point of his career and the Huskies never looked back.

The scoring for the rest of the game all happened in the third period as Ryan Poehling netted two goals and Patrick Newell got one of his own to seal the game and run up his career point number to 99.

Saturday night brought in a multitude of changes for both teams. The RedHawks changed goaltenders bringing in junior Ryan Larkin and they brought back in usual starter freshman Scott Corbett.

The Huskies lose freshman Nolan Walker to an upper body injury and Jack Poehling is ruled out as a healthy scratch tonight. Filling out the lineup for the home team are junior Jake Whalin and sophomore Will Hammer. While senior Jacob Benson moves up the lineup to fill out the Poehling brother line.

The game started the same as last night with a quick goal just 2:25 in on the PP when junior Blake Lizotte scored in similar fashion to the first goal from the night before. Junior Jack Ahcan finished a Newell pass from the high slot. Newell officially claims his 100th point of his career and joins Shuldt and senior Robby Jackson at the century mark.

Jackson flashed his offensive prowess in the second period. Jackson made a beautiful move on the PP to walk around a defenseman to the blocker side of Larkin and slide the puck across the crease to a wide open Lizotte who buried his ninth of the year.

The two swapped on the next goal when Lizotte fed it back to Jackson who was in position for the goal because of a penalty against him.

The party in the second didn’t end there as freshman Nick Prebix picked up goal number two of his career on a feed from Newell.

The third period saw no goals scored on the Huskies side but the RedHawks broke the shutout with a PP at 12:26 in. The goal was netted by Gordie Green when he found the puck in the slot and roofed it in the net.

The final score of Saturdays game was 5-1 in a mirror to Fridays matchup. My three stars of the weekend are going to be Ryan Poehling, Robby Jackson and Blake Lizotte.

The Huskies will be in action this upcoming weekend against the Colorado College Tigers who picked up a big win against UMD this weekend. Friday nights game will be at 8:07 and Saturday will be at 6:07 and both games will be broadcast on 88.1 KVSC.
