The St. Cloud State University men’s hockey team opened the 2018-19 season on Sunday with a 6-2 win in an exhibition game against Mount Royal University. Scoring started in the first when Senior Jacob Benson buried a one-time chance in the slot on the power play. Two freshmen, Nolan Walker and Nick Perbix, helped open the ice on the play eventually working the puck to Benson for the goal. Nick Poehling netted his first goal of the night late in the first off passes passes from Kevin Fitzgerald and Spencer Meier.

Senior Jimmy Schuldt scored the eventual game winner four minutes into the second period to kick off what should be another Hobey Baker candidacy performance; last season Schuldt was the only NCAA defenseman up for the award. Jack Ahcan and Blake Lizotte would each score before Nick Poehling would cap the night off for SCSU with his second tally of the evening.

In Head Coach Brett Larson’s first game behind the bench for St. Cloud State we saw every skater on the roster dress and see ice time, including goalies.  David Hrenak opened the game for SCSU stopping all three shots he saw his way in the first period, with Jeff Smith and David Zevnik each allow one goal to get passed them on ten and four shots respectively.

Notable performances included the defensive pairing of Sophomore Luke Jaycox and Freshman Brendan Bushy, the pairing started the night as the third listed but got noticeably increased playing time throughout the game as the solid two-way play of Jaycox and the offensive mindset of Bushy made for a dynamic combination. Freshman Sam Hentges also impressed in his debut although not finding his way onto the scoresheet, did nearly everything in his power to do so as he created multiple scoring chances for himself through sheer ability and a high hockey IQ.

St. Cloud State will be on the road this coming weekend traveling to face the University of Alaska Fairbanks for games Friday and Saturday.
