Quick Start, Strong Pitching Propels Huskies Past Texans
Najee Gaskins went 3-5 with a solo home run and three runs scored

St. Cloud State Baseball (2-0, 0-0 NSIC) scored 7 runs in the first two innings and picked up an electric afternoon from three lefthanders as part of a 9-1 victory over Tarleton State (1-1, 0-0 LSC) in their second game of the Houston Winter Invitational.

Najee Gaskins (3-5, 3 R, BB, HR, RBI, SB) opened the game with a single, followed by a Jordan Joseph (2-4, BB, R, RBI) base hit. After a fielders choice, Mat Meyer drove in the game’s first run with a groundout. Caeden Harris smacked an RBI single into right to score Joseph, then Lenny Walker (1-3, BB, 2 SB), Toran Shahidi and Matt Quade walked to load the bases and score a second run on the latter’s reaching.

Gaskins belted his first home run of the season to lead off the second inning, then Joseph singled. Mitch Mallek and Meyer each walked, then Harris drew another base on balls to bring in Joseph. Walker grounded into a run-scoring fielders choice, and Shahidi capped off the scoring with a sacrifice fly to center.

The Huskies struck again in the fifth as Gaskins singled, stole second then scored on a Mallek RBI single. Jordan Joseph brought in Erik Holloman in the ninth on a bases-loaded walk to give SCSU their ninth and final run.

Tarleton State catcher Abel Osoria provided the Texans’ lone run with a solo home run in the fourth.

True sophomore Matt Osterberg gutted through 5.0 excellent frames to receive his first win of 2019, allowing just one earned while scattering three hits and four walks, striking out five. Shannon Ahern notched a hold, covering 3.0 scoreless innings of one-hit baseball while racking up four strikeouts. All-American lefthander Cal Giese made his return from injury, his first appearance in 624 days, by firing a clean 1-2-3 ninth inning with one punchout.

St. Cloud State takes on Central Region rival Central Missouri on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in their final game of the Houston Winter Invitational. Two-time All-American Sheldon Miks will make his first start since 2017. Husky Den PreGame on the KVSC Sports Stream will begin at 12:45 p.m. with Thomas Breach on the call at Minute Maid Park.
