SCSU Volleyball Closes Promising Season With Back-to-Back Losses
Second Team All-NSIC Libero Clara Krenz

St. Cloud State Volleyball ended the 2016 season with just 8 victories, 21 losses, and a 3-17 conference record.

2017 served as a looking glass into the exciting future of Huskies Volleyball, as the program doubled their win total. The Huskies finished the season at 16-14, the second time in 19 years that SCSU closed with a record better than .500 and the first time they hit that mark since the 19-win 2004 season. The squad hung their hats on defense, as their hitting percentage defense improved by a whopping 55 points, from .253 to .198. Sophomore Libero Clara Krenz led the NSIC in digs per det with a mark of 5.92, placing her top-20 in the Nation. Krenz was a Second-Team All-NSIC selection, the program's first All-Conference pick since Brianne Stamer's 2015 Second-Team season. The Huskies did not lose a single conference game against an opponent that hadn't received NCAA Top-25 votes, and they achieved the first ranked win in the Braegelmann era with a home sweep of #18 Wayne State College on September 23rd.

The team graduates three seniors in Outside Hitter Nicole Miller, Rightside Becca Gruber, and Setter Kayla Crane. Crane and Miller were instrumental in the defensive turnaround, placing second and fourth on the squad in digs per set respectively. Gruber served as the primary attacker for the Huskies, leading the team in kills, attack attempts, and hitting percentage. St. Cloud State will certainly miss the contributions of the three standouts as they move forward into 2018.

Looking ahead to 2018, the Huskies likely will be a serious contender for an NSIC Tournament berth, returning great depth to their defense. Krenz will enter her Junior season looking to repeat an outstanding 2017 season, while Taylor Olstad and Lindsay Brunssen will help solidify the back row in their second seasons. Middle Hitter pair Micah Nier and Marah Mulso each hit better than .200 for SCSU, and the two will likely anchor the middle for the team. At the pins, the team will rely on Senior-To-Be Krista Kuglin and second-year Abby Templin as hitters with experience. Maddy Torve likely will improve on a promising freshman season at the Setter spot, as the team may make the move to a 5-1 lineup.

The Huskies closed 2017 with two road sweeps by #22 Wayne State and #18 Augustana. The program announced their early 2018 signees here.
