Retired St. Cloud State University Music Professor Kenton Frohrip remembered

Kenton Frohrip conducts, St. Cloud State University, October 1984

A retired music professor from St. Cloud State University is being remembered fondly by faculty and students. Dr. Kenton Frohrip passed away on May 24.

Current music department chair Kristian Twombly shared the news with the campus community and wrote that Frohrip arrived at SCSU in 1965 from South Dakota State University as Instructor of Music, and Director of the Sports Band.

By 1974, Frohrip became a full professor. He taught trombone as well as a number of different ensembles at SCSU, including the jazz band, which he founded in 1967.

He was an avid traveler, served as Director of the Alnwick Program many times, took students on international tours, and helped develop an exchange program in the arts with the Czech Republic.

Frohip is also known for tireless advocacy for the arts. He started the summer music program at Clemens Munsinger Garden and at one time served on KVSC’s Community Advisory Board.

There will be a service for Dr. Kenton Frohrip on Saturday, June 22 at 10:30 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church in St. Cloud that will feature lots of brass music. His wife Karen said, he wants a party!
